Project:
"Development of an air transportation system for Northern Italy: an opportunity for Italy"

Certain conditions of efficiency and competitiveness in air transport can make a positive contribution to the creation of demand for goods, services and employment while, at the same time, providing rapid transport between economic and tourist centers. In fact, for the North of Italy alone, it is calculated that an additional 1 million passengers per year would have an impact on the region equivalent to creating approx. 1000 direct jobs.

However, in terms of the number of players and variables in play, the complexity of a national air transport system requires careful strategic planning, along with an approach of coordinating long-term development of the system.

In essence, in this context, it implies a shared, single mission for the entire system. Just as fundamental are the short-term definition of a regulatory framework to provide certainty for those working in the sector and a stable point of reference.

In this context, construction of a major air transport pole in Northern Italy represents a highly-important competitive asset for the economic development of the entire country.

Nonetheless, creation of an integrated national air transport system must necessarily depend on the upgrading and development of the country's road and rail system and, in particular, in northern Italy to assure passengers and goods rapid and economical transport throughout the country.

Just as important are the operational efficiency (in terms of efficient management of internal processes) and attraction (in terms of services offered, including those not strictly flight-related) of the airports, a key competitive lever.

The air transport system is called upon to become an important part of the regional promotional system, creating synergy between the airport and the area in which it is located. From this standpoint, as shown in the Study "Development of an air transportation system for Northern Italy: an opportunity for Italy" the Italian airport system can play an extremely important role in benefiting the potential and distinctive qualities of the entire country.
