Regenerating Real Estate Assets: the Energy Revolution of Buildings

The ENGIE Observatory for Energy Innovation, created in 2013 with the purpose of analyzing key aspects related to energy innovation in Italy and Europe and to present them to major national stakeholders, is now in its fifth year.

As in previous years, The European House – Ambrosetti, in collaboration with ENGIE Italia has organized a number of exclusive meetings and interviews with a top-level panel of sector experts, opinion leaders and representatives of government and the business community to examine this year’s theme.

The 2017 Observatory has taken a deeper look at the theme selected in 2016 which was improving air quality through energy efficiency. While last year emphasis was placed on the importance of buildings and their level of energy efficiency in effectively reducing polluting emissions, this year’s analysis underscores how technological innovation, high energy consumption standards and coherent action strategies can contribute to regenerating Italy’s real estate assets. Specifically, the analysis carried out in the report focuses on residential buildings and, secondarily, on office or service sector buildings, with only marginal examination of industrial properties.

Therefore, the goal of the interviews was to understand and gather authoritative points of view regarding the opportunities that technological development offers in the regeneration of buildings and their efficiency and sustainability, the opportunities and barriers that exist in Italy and the lines of action to be taken by the country as a whole.
