A look at the magnitude and potential of health tourism in its broadest sense as examined in this document, includes both medical tourism and wellness tourism.
Planning stability and simplification, policies to promote health and prevention, incentives for research and innovation, investment in infrastructure and technologies, and collaboration with local stakeholders and industrial players—these are the elements policy-makers must focus on to make the country more attractive and competitive on the international scene.
Starting from some observations in the paper, “The importance of the health ecosystem as a factor of economic growth, social cohesion and the sustainable development of an area”, presented last year during the first Meridiano Sanità Sicilia Forum—in which the connection between the attractiveness of the health ecosystem of an area and the competitiveness of the area itself was highlighted—the analysis in this document is designed to spark reflection on the magnitude and potential of health tourism which, in its broadest sense as examined in this document, includes both medical tourism and wellness tourism.
