Metropolitan Cities,
the Recovery Starts Here

The Metropolitan Cities will contribute to institutional innovation and the social-economic improvement of the country. For this reason,  ANCI, the National Association of Italian Municipalities, in partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo and in collaboration with The European House – Ambrosetti, has promoted the “Start City” to contribute to defining the general methodological and strategic guidelines for economic and social development.

Metropolitan Cities, the Recovery Starts Here

Metropolitan Cities have also been established in Italy since January 1, 2015: Turin, Milan, Venice, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Bari, Naples and Reggio Calabria (created by the so-called “Delrio Law” no. 56/2014) added to which are Palermo, Catania, Messina and Cagliari in special statute regions.

The Metropolitan Cities are the “backbone” of Italy because they are hubs of resources and expertise and nodes for the flow of people, goods, capital and ideas.

Given the strategic importance of these new institutions ANCI, the National Association of Italian Municipalities, in partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo and in collaboration with The European House – Ambrosetti, has promoted the “Start City” project with the aim of:

  1. Providing Italian Metropolitan Cities with general method and strategy guidelines for an economic development that will result in employment growth and attract new investments.
  2. Promoting a constructive dialogue between stakeholders, contributing to the creation of a shared vision of those issues that are of crucial interest and those problem areas that are associated with the success of Metropolitan Cities in Italy.
  3. Transmitting the importance and significance of those issues discussed for modernizing and improving the country.

The major findings and the proposals of Start City were introduced and discussed at the “Metropolitan Cities – the Recovery Starts Here” Forum, which took place in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence on Thursday, January 28, and Friday, January 29, 2016.
