Corporate performance positive, but economic growth and employment forecasts problematic: results of the first online survey

During the discussion of the first session of the 30th “Outlook for the Economy and Finance” Workshop, the businessmen present in the room were asked to express their views regarding the performance and prospects for growth of their companies.

Specifically, a significant portion of the businessmen (approx. 200) who took part in the first online survey of the day believe that their company is performing better than its competitors (47.3%). This figure is up about 3 percentage points compared with the 2017 survey.

However, businessmen were cautious about turnover for the close of 2019. Forecasts have been lowered—less than 10% growth—by about 41.3% of survey respondents. Belief in a more than a 10% growth in turnover was expressed by only 22.2% of those voting, down by about 6 points compared with 2017 sentiment (28.6%).

On the employment front, approx. one-third of the businessmen did not note any particular change in the increase. Just 13.7% of those voting foresee an increase in the number of people employed of over 10%.

The businessmen also responded regarding a forecast in the trend of the dollar/euro exchange rate over the coming six months. The audience agreed in foreseeing a weaker euro (43.1%). Only 23.1% was more optimistic, expecting a stronger euro than the current exchange rate.
