Propensity to invest rising, but political instability and Brexit could condition the business activity of Italian companies

In the third session of the “Outlook for the Economy and Finance” Workshop, the theme of investment risk for Italian companies was discussed.

Company plans for investment seem to be on the rise. 27.5% of the businessmen involved estimate them to be 10% higher than in the last three-year period, while 15.8% estimate more than 20%.

Despite this positive tendency, there are a number of aspects that could dampen the business activity of Italian companies. The most significant is the instability of the Italian political situation and its effects on Europe (34.7%), a perception that grew by 9 points compared with last year. This is followed by the Brexit question (19.8%), whose potential negative effects are perceived to be much higher than in 2018 (5.7%).

On the other hand, Trumpnomics does not appear to be that worrying and its perceived risk by businessmen decreased from 21.3% in 2018 to the current 10.9%.

The geographic areas in which investment will be concentrated most, according to Italian businessmen, are Italy (32.8%), Europe (20.7%) and Asia/Oceania (18.1%).
