The entry of genomics and epigenomics into life sciences is paving the way for progress which, until just a short time ago, seemed unimaginable. For example, the cost of genome sequencing (per genome) has dropped from $95 million in 2001 to $1,300 in February 2019, making it possible to experiment new therapies that could modify the history of a number of serious diseases and potentially completely modify their clinical evolution.
DNA sequencing is revolutionizing the way research is being done and how healthcare and biopharmaceutical development are conceived. The goal is to attain increasingly-personalized and precise levels of intervention in patient care and with a prevention-focused approach. The new approach to treatment that is generated is part of what, today, is known as Personalized and Precision Medicine.
Being able to manage this change could guarantee Italy a competitive advantage in the creation of a new industry. Technology transfer, scientific and high-tech infrastructure and specialized competencies are the keys around which to build a strategy.
This round table will offer an opportunity to examine and discuss how to make Italy an example of excellence in the genomic and epigenomic field, starting from the experience in Trieste to promote the creation of a regional and national network in support of the competitiveness of this sector on an international level.
For this occasion, a selected group of representatives from business, government and institutions, finance and academia will be gathered together to activate—with the contribution of all—a constructive dialog. This event is a continuation of and in synergy with the work and goals of the InnoTech Community and Life Sciences Community of The European House – Ambrosetti.
