Preview of the report “If the South of Italy fails, the Country fails. Proposals” – Speech by Valerio De Molli, September 11, 2015.
The South of Italy is having to come to grips with a starting position that his highly compromised compared with the macro-regions of not only Italy, but also other parts of Europe, with a negative trend that has worsened in the wake of the economic crisis that began in 2008.
As part of this, it is important to underscore that the gradual impoverishment of the human and entrepreneurial resources that has affected and continues to affect Italy’s south and its islands could prevent the southern part of the country from being launched on the path towards growth that other Italian macro-regions are experiencing and which is indispensable for creating a turnaround to overcome the two-way gap that has always characterized Italy and which has become accentuated since the late 1990s.
The recent studies and debates that have placed the South of Italy once again at the center of political attention and the Italian economy are useful for reminding us that the “southern question” must be rethought in order to place it actively at the center of the political agenda as part of an organic and systematic project that is indispensable for the development and growth of the entire country.
Without wanting to replace the governmental bodies that have the task of defining political and economic guidelines, policy programs and allocation of public funding, the Banca del Mezzogiorno-Medio Credito Centrale, together with The European House – Ambrosetti, want to make a contribution to the proposals and observations in the conviction that the debate which emerged during the summer of 2015 deserves to be kept alive and fed with the ideas and commitment of all those who have at-heart the future not only of the South of Italy, but the country as a whole.
Below is the speech by Valerio De Molli at the Conference of European Innovators entitled “For a Southern Italy leadership between Europe and Mediterranean. The proposal of European Innovators”. His remarks offered a synopsis of the report “IF THE SOUTH OF ITALY FAILS, THE COUNTRY FAILS. PROPOSALS”, prepared by The European House – Ambrosetti in collaboration with Banca del Mezzogiorno – MCC, will be presented during a meeting of the Ambrosetti Club to be held in Rome on this coming November 9.
