The businessmen at Cernobbio have regained their trust in Europe, despite the fact they have strong concerns about the growth in populism

Trust in Europe is growing. This is the prevalent feeling among the over 200 businessmen attending the Cernobbio Forum organized by The European House – Ambrosetti. According to the first online survey carried out on Saturday, 22.8% have high confidence in Europe, compared with 8% last year. On the other hand, 4.1% have very low confidence (13.3% in 2018).

What should be the three top priorities of the European Commision? In first place, businessmen at Cernobbio indicated more effective action regarding security, immigration and foreign policy (19.%), in second place, strengthening the Single Market (15.9%), and in third place, greater collaboration in budget policy and tax structure (15.2%).

In terms of bailout policy, the case study examined by the businessmen was that of Greece and their opinions were canvassed before and after the presentation by the former prime minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras. While the survey before registered a very negative opinion (16.7%), following Trispras’ presentation, this percentage decreased to 10%.

The businessmen were also asked about the risk of a populist trend in Europe: 3.6% of attendees consider this risk to be very low, while 14% consider the risk to be high.
