The contribution of Private Labels towards the challenge of Sustainable development

Marca” is the second largest trade fair in Europe for the Private Label sector, and the only Italian event devoted to the Private Label, with over 750 companies exhibiting products of Italian excellence sold under private labels. The trade fair is organized by BolognaFiere in collaboration with Associazione della Distribuzione Moderna – ADM (Modern Distribution Association).

For the last three years, The European House – Ambrosetti has been involved in developing the broad future scenarios for modern-day distribution, with special focus on the issue of Private Labels, and in organizing the opening event of Marca.

At the 2018 edition of Marca, The European House – Ambrosetti presented a Position Paper entitled «Private Labels: value and role for the national economy», in which it calculated the value that the Private Label industry generates for the country, through the multidimensional model of the «Four Capitals», highlighting the contribution that the Private Label makes to the economic, social, cognitive and environmental capital of Italy.

The 2019 Position Paper entitled “Benefits and Challenges for Private Labels Today”, developed a specific analysis into the contribution that the Private Label makes for the growth and evolution of the copacker companies through a detailed breakdown of the financial statements of 350 companies over the last 10 years. The study went into some depth on the contribution of Private Labels qualifying their distinctive values in relation to food safety and quality.

The strategic study prepared by The European House – Ambrosetti, in collaboration with ADM – Associazione Distribuzione Moderna, for the 2020 edition concerns the contribution of Private Labels in the challenge for sustainable and Italian growth.

During the morning, in addition to the study results, we discussed the following themes:

  • How to combine Sustainable Development with economic growth
  • What is the role of the agrifood chain in the challenge towards Sustainable Development.
  • What is the contribution of Private Labels to the development of sustainable models in the relations with their reference stakeholders: Modern Distribution, the companies of the supply chain and the end consumer.
